Do you know that something was happening in the past few weeks? Exactly, a mass movement was occurred which was the 2014 Occupy Central Movement, also known as the Umbrella Movement or Umbrella Revolution. Thousands of Hong Kong pro-democracy activists protested outside the government headquarters and occupied several major city intersections since 26th September 2014.
During the period, The Hong Kong Federation of Students (representing tertiary students) and Scholarism (representing secondary students) mobilized students to boycott classes. It arouses teenagers begin to concern more about politics and the society. Students become a part of main power in this movement. They oppose the National People's Congress committee decision and request an electoral reform of chief executive. They strive for Hong Kong freedom and democracy. After that, clash was broken out between police and the activists. On the other hand, some people who opposed to this movement, occurred conflict with the activists because they thought the movement had already influenced the operation and stability of Hong Kong seriously.

At the moment, it is meaningless to debate which side is correct or wrong because both sides have their reasonable points. I respect the side that strives for democracy is important for Hong Kong and also understand another side why they disagree with the movement. I would like to discuss about the effects on Hong Kong society. Besides the disruption to the lives of ordinary citizens caused by roads blocked, traffic jams, school closures, and financial loss to businesses, the protests are causing extremely different opinion of Hong Kong citizens, with a "yellow (pro-occupy) vs. blue (anti-occupy)' war being fought and unfriending on social media. Conflicts existed within peer groups and between parents and children due to the differences of value and opinion. As my experience, I saw friends were quarrelling on the Facebook and they unfriend with each other. Quite a few cases of family breakdown between parents and their children was also reported on the news. Massively, different side of people had collision on the street in Mong Kok. It totally destroys the peace and stability of Hong Kong. I feel upset and helpless to the situation and hope everyone can communicate together in a peaceful, rational and constructive way. Doubtlessly, government has the largest responsibility to solve the public dispute. A real democracy is that we can accept different ideas and respect with each other. Otherwise, it is just a selfish behavior and it becomes no difference with authoritarianism.
