Hong Kong football was early developed in the beginning of 20th century. In the 80’s of 19 century, Hong Kong football was a legend and they had a high level of their league. Many famous football players would like playing football in Hong Kong. For instance, Santos was the most famous player at that time who came from Brazil. (Brazil is the kingdom of football, they create a lot of world class players and get the most FIFA World Cup for 5 times.) Hong Kong had a well-developed football organizational system at that time because it was been the colony of England, experts who came from England to promote the football game to Hong Kong and help them to build up the basic system.
However, Hong Kong football was gone down gradually with unsatisfactory result since their policy turned to finance. Hong Kong became a total financial city and do not value football as an elite sport. Until 2009, it could be a turning point in the diminishing football standards of Hong Kong. On the 12th of December, they defeated Japan and won their first East Asian Games football gold medal. This unexpected and surprising result, raised the belief that the Hong Kong football team could perform their best again.

Although this is encouraging and arousing, they still need to face lots of difficulties. Hong Kong became a financial city nowadays and no more people willing to be a professional football player because of the low salary and gloomy prospect. Therefore, it is necessary to change this condition. First, government must offer more funds and resources for the development such as youth training or buying equipment. Meanwhile, foreign coach with expertise should be introduced to the club, they can enhance the ability of players by using advanced science and technology. It is the shortage of Hong Kong football. Second, tickets are one of the important incomes of a club, they need money for the club to increase the salary of football player so that it can guarantee their life. Hence, Government and the club should do more promotions and advertisements to attract more citizens to go to the pitch and watch their competitions. Third, the players are worth to receive more opportunities of job from government and the club after their retirement, namely helping them to be a coach or working in some football association. Actually, they have contributions in sports for Hong Kong and they have professional experience in this area, it can directly help the football development. Finally, government should build more pitches because football playgrounds are fully booked particularly in the weekend. It shows that lots of people in Hong Kong are like playing football but unfortunately there are not enough places for them, especially it lacks of pitches and facilities to those professional teams for training. You can see the problem is not because people do not like football but it lacks of venue to them.
If those problems can be improved, Hong Kong football will be more successful in the future. I hope Hong Kong people would like to watch football match every weekend with their family or friends, likes the Premier League in England. They see this activity for an important entertainment so you can know why football is really successful in England. Hong Kong may get some ideas from them.
